Just for a bit of fun, I thought I'd try and start some banter.
It's been a grand season with lots of highlights noted in some rather splendid match reports. There are probably too many to list. But that's no reason not to try! So, the question is, what are your highlights of the season? There have been a lot for me…great performances, good wins, fun games, good banter etc. But one stands out for me…
My enduring "moment of the season" is a memory from a pretty awful second team game against South Cave, away from home. I was captain as Mike and Steve were both unavailable (not a good start to proceedings!). We got thrashed – bowled out for just over 60 in drizzly weather on a horrible pitch. They chased it down without loss. My undefeated streak as captain (one game vs. Ovington in 2010) was over!
However, there was a shining moment. Geoff Seavers and Brad Wood were batting in the middle order and at least stopped the rot by batting for around 10 overs after an early flurry of wickets. Geoff was struggling to score though, and had only managed a couple of singles. However, as he grew more confident, he started to play a lovely cover drive, which he did 3 times in a row. Unfortunately the first two times he hit it straight to the same fielder – frustrating, as they were beautiful shots.
The third time, it was the same story – hit firmly to the same fielder. However, the fielder made an unfortunate error and the ball went through his legs and rolled down the hill for 4. The team cheered Geoff's fortune, and some much needed runs, from the pavilion…
…and Geoff, of course, acknowledged the applause by raising his bat above his head, in the manner of man that's scored 100 at Lords! I think he went on to score 7 or 8 in total. But, in my mind, it was a *moral hundred*, given how that day went, and I still have a grin when I think of Geoff raising his bat, imagining Richie Benaud commentating:
"and we're at the South Cave Oval, where Seavers has just raised his bat to the crowd having amassed 7 with that glorious cover drive…"
