On a record-breaking day in Askham Bryan’s Fantasy League, Mike Bains, the Magnus Magnussen (however spelt) of Askham Bryan Cricket Club helped himself to his first 100 point haul in the competition (117), becoming the seventh player to do so. David Knight bettered his own 175 points total to score a new FL record of 190 points, just 10 points short of that magical, and some say ‘mythical’, total of 200.
The first Fantasy League Table of the year is also now published and D. Knight also tops that! Makes you sick! But, as we saw last year, there is a long way to go. It is nice to see ex-player, and club member Steve Holman in second place, his team picked largely by pointing a finger at the player of his choice (and then amended by me, pointing him in an entirely different and more appropriate direction). Chris Pamplin, who almost got it right this year except for not giving his team a team name, erred on the side of abidance with the general rules of the competition in selecting his eleven players, and has been rewarded thus far with a position of third place. My own ‘The Old ‘uns are best XI’ would be doing far better had it not been for crippling back injuries to myself and Colin Garnett that may well be a feature amongst my players, and could ruin this team’s bid for glory. Pete Wood’s ‘Woody Likes a Cheaper One’ made up of the cheapest buys on offer (the team costing marginally less than last year’s ‘Woody likes a cheap one’) brings up the rear. And yes, Mark Grewer has yet again got Terry in his team!
One point of note from the two weeks so far is that of the top eleven players in the Fantasy League Players List six are from the first team and five are from the second, which is just about as even a spread as you can get from eleven. The top eleven doesn’t include a wicket keeper as yet, but Chris Pamplin is the early pacesetter amongst that particular breed.
Pete Wood returned to form with the ball this week securing a total of 88 points in all, and after finishing second in last year’s competition is looking a strong candidate in this year’s competition as well.
Spare a thought for £5m. rated batsmen Gus McKenzie though, who, in two games so far, is yet to trouble the scorers. Gus is one of the Fantasy League’s centurions and I am sure these first two games are just a blip and he will soon be recording his second three figure haul.
Finally, just to mention that five players have made it to the 100 points mark for this season, Ian ‘Burton Agnes’Hall just making it to that landmark thanks to his wicket and catch on Saturday.
Good luck everyone for next week, and let’s have more teams coming – from relatives and friends as well if possible! Thank you for your support!
