Annual Dinner Report
On a dry and dusty evening in Bilbrough, the “who’s who” of Askham Bryan CC had turned out in full force for the magnificent end of season do. Amongst the attendees there were the Woods, the Pamplins, the Masons…and of course, The Grewer.
The Three Hares had stepped in as the venue after our beloved Nag’s Head had been “between owners”…and what a job they did too. The venue was regal, the beer flowed well and most importantly the food was delicious. See the “tea” section below for further details. Check out the photos page also for some pictures from the evening.
Mike Hodgkinson (2009 2nd team Captain) and Pete Wood (2009 1st team captain) both gave excellent speeches as part of the dinner, summing up the highs and lows of the season for the club. Only those present will hear the full account, but a quick summary of a couple of the points…
- On behalf of the club, Mike thanked Colin Garnett for his 15 years of marvellous service to ABCC. Not only was he opening the batting still in his final year, but he also returned as a wicket taking force with 3 scalps during the season. Colin was given a hearty round of applause for all his efforts.
- Woody thanked a number of the team for their efforts, with particular reference to Mis Slezak’s unique bowling performance at Drax that created the term “The Polish Corridor of Uncertainty”

Tea
It would, of course, be wrong not to provide some comments on the food.
Unlike the Askham first team, the openers were very strong, with soup, pate or black pudding as the choices. The soup was a solid tomato and basil with a fresh roll. The pate (or parfait, if you will) was well presented with a garden of side salad, and the black pudding was well cooked and enjoyed by its takers.
The middle order was also well received – the steak was delicious, beautifully seasoned with cracked black pepper. The chicken was, of course, supreme. The barnsley chops and risottos were also munched down with much satisfaction.
The tail end provided a tough choice for many – the tangy autumn fruit crumble with custard setting a high standard, which was also matched by a splendid cherry tart and a very chocolatey torte. Reports also said that the cheese board offered was of a similar standard to that provided at North Cave at the end of the season.
Overall a good evening was had by all, rounding off another good season at Askham Bryan. Many thanks to our splendid social secretary for organising the event and to “The Grewer” for MC-ing.

Parfait? I won’t.
The risotto was one of the finest ever annihilated by The Copeland; blue cheese cheekily underlined by a red pepper base. Marvellous.
The overall standard of facial hair was excellent. A spokesman from the Beard Liberation Front commented that with such a strong showing ABCC would be “nailed on” for double promotion next year.
Anyone care to enlighten us as to what Rob was doing under that hood?

The Dale was fixing the lightbulb on Veronica’s car. Jon was helping him…Mis and I decided to go out to “supervise” and “provide useful insight”. I believe this was key to the eventual correction of the defect.
Maybe we should start an “ABCC Beard of the Year” award to go along with the other trophies? I’m not sure who my vote would go to at this stage. You can’t really vote on these things on a whim, it takes consideration.
