Week 6 Match Report

Wood disappoints friends with an untimely return to form

The home side won the toss and decided to bat on a very sunny day at Kelfield. We welcomed backed Sideshow after his time out travelling. He weighed in with an unlucky 2-47 on a quick wicket. Woody was fired up bowling at the other end and returned figures of 4 – 38. The other bowlers played their part without any luck as we dropped six catches and Kelfield reached 194 – 6 off 40 overs.

The highlight of tea was a homemade chocolate cake; this was complemented by a fine selection of sandwiches, sausage rolls, warm scones and a quiche. Tea had not had time to settle before we were one down with David exiting, run out after only facing one ball. Grewer and Copeland then steadied the ship with a 50 partnership, Grewer showing good form by inside-edging the ball down to fine leg with ease on his way to 30. Copeland was driving the ball well and reached 30 before an attempted pull shot dribbled onto the stump just knocking off the bail. This brought together Dickinson and Wood. Woody’s batting was heavily influenced by his need to meet dinner reservations taking a”hit out or get out” policy. Unfortunately the form he has shown in the past two seasons deserted him and he ended up 81 not out, including five 6′s and eight 4′s. Wood was well supported by Alex Dickinson who played a faultless innings of 31 not out, working the ball to all areas of the field. The target of 194 was reached in 33 overs with 6 wickets in hand.

On a wonderful day at the college, Mike duly lost the toss and Askham were put into bat. After Colin Garnett was unlucky to lose his wicket early on, Paul “Scooby” Thornton and Chris Parker put on a substantial partnership, with both batsmen looking in excellent touch. After Scooby was out for 20, Chris continued his excellent innings with a splendid array of pull shots and drives. Chris Pamplin, Steve Mason, Tom O’Donovan and Prateek Sharma provided some excellent support, until Chris was caught on 69 – a fine innings, particularly for somebody in their first match of the season! This left Askham on around 130 with another 10 overs remaining.

Prateek was unfortunate to depart shortly after Chris after being hit by a full toss, leaving Albert Hall and VC Terry Kiernan at the crease. To the surprise of the crowd (and also themselves), the two put on over 30 runs together, with Albert using his patented “cross batted swipe” and Terry showing off some beautiful cover drives that he must’ve recently learnt from a Boycott batting tips video. After Albert (14) gave another catch to Mike Charno at square leg, Bradley Wood came in to see off the remaining few overs of the innings, achieving his second “not out” innings for the club with some solid batting. Most importantly, the final runs Brad and Terry put on enabled Askham to hit 175 and achieve maximum batting points for the day.

The RI faced a difficult battle for runs straight away, with Scooby and Skipper Mike bowling very tight lines and giving little away. Their probing bowling paid off and wickets began to fell to both bowlers. A superb catch from Chris Parker saw off RI danger man Mike Charno, with Chris catching the ball at rocket speed in the covers. A fine piece of fielding from Prateek saw the run out of John Latham, and Askham were truly on top. Scooby continued to pick up wickets, and ended up with another well-deserved 5 wicket haul. Another fine piece of fielding saw Prateek pick up his second run out of the day, finishing the RI off for 58 all out.
