Askham 2nds beat weather (with a garden fork, a broom and plenty of sawdust!!) to record first victory
Selby 87-5
Tight bowling from Askham seamers Lee (1-18 off 12, Thornton 2-18 off 14, Hodgkinson 2-18 off 11) restricted Selby to just 87 off their 40 overs. The main resistance coming from Knight 40no.
Cunningly Vice-captain Terry Kiernan allowed the score to pass 75 with some ‘generous offerings’, thus bringing batting points into play!
A rain break of an hour was forced upon us, with Selby struggling at 20-1 off 16 overs, when improper use of the covers left a large puddle at one end of the wicket. Scooby quickly donned his groundsman hat and set to work with a garden fork!!
Askham 88-5 (off 25.2 overs)
Askham never really looked in trouble despite slipping from 31-1 to 49-4. J Lee on debut (making the 20th person to turn out for Askham 2nds this season!!) top scored with 22, ably assisted by Mike Bains 20, Steve Mason 17no and Paul Thornton 15.
Rain denies “four-in-a-row” for firsts
The first team fixture against Acomb was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch at Askham Bryan College. Many of the first team were seen out jogging, swimming or power-walking instead due to their enthusiasm for Saturday sport.
