Another Knight to Remember…
The first team put together a respectable 194 runs as the target for Heworth thanks largely to the 120 scored by David Knight, including 9 sixes. After riding some early luck after being dropped, David went on to score his second century in two weeks and was the backbone of the Askham innings. Mis Slezak also contributed 15 – including some superb boundaries – and Chris Copeland’s first knock of the season saw him joining the “six club”, with a big hit into the blossom tree.
The target was always going to be a challenge for Heworth, and looked to be an uphill struggle after losing two early wickets courtesy of the bowling of Messrs Grewer and Wood. However, their ship did steady and they recovered to just over 80 on the 20 over mark. However, two wickets for David Knight got Askham back on track, with the remaining wickets falling steadily and Heworth ending short of their target. All five bowlers got wickets, the pick being Pete Wood, who took 4 wickets with two spells of sharp bowling, and David Knight, who took two wickets with some accurate bowling after his earlier batting heroics.
Other notable incidents in the game:
- A beautiful “forehand” drive from Mis Slezak during his innings, sending the ball racing to the cover boundary
- A fantastic diving catch from Jon McCullogh from the bowling of Mr Knight (junior)
- Chris Copeland’s early entrance into the season’s quote book, with his views on modern technology: “There’s no achievement in getting somewhere using sat nav”
Mike the “bain” of Stockton & Hopgrove
The second team put a valiant battle up at Stockton & Hopgrove, with Mike Bains the pick of the batsmen, compiling 97 runs in the Askham Bryan total. Unfortunately, the total was not enough with Stockton & Hopgrove chasing the total down after the loss of 2 wickets.
